Whether you’re shooting hoops at Pasadena High School or enjoying world famous pastrami at The Hat on Lake Ave. in South Pasadena, one thing’s for sure: the crown city of Pasadena is a classy place. The quaint homes lining the streets are all of higher caliber than the surrounding areas. Why is this so? Well, to start, most of the homes in Pasadena, CA have hardwood flooring. Now I know what you’re probably thinking, what do hardwood floors have to do with class? In actuality, wood floors are some of the most luxurious as well as some of the most financially sound flooring options out of the multitude of options available. Not only are hardwood floors more durable than tile, carpet, or vinyl, they’re also environmentally and family friendly.

Still not sure? Let’s examine these closer:

Hardwood floors contain no bacterial or fungal growth if properly maintained. Less stuff growin, more floor showin’!

Hardwood floors provide some of the best ROI (return-on-investment) for home improvement, often doubling the initial investment. Twice as nice, twice the price!

Hardwood floors have a dramatically decreased environmental impact; several companies offer EPA-approved flooring options at the same or even lower price. Go Green for more green!

Hardwood floors are the most durable conventional option available: no need to replace every 10 years, just refinish every 20 or 30. Last more than carpet, vinyl, or tile; it’ll last a long while.

Hardwood floors are incredibly easy to clean and keep that way. Like to entertain? Easy to maintain.

Of course, even without all of these benefits, hardwood floors simply look amazing. A nice Maple sets a pleasant atmosphere in any home, or a deep Red American Cherry can brighten up an otherwise bland room. Anything is possible with hardwood floors.  So all of you Pasadenos looking to increase the value of your home, or just want a change of pace, give Century Custom Hardwood Floors in Pasadena a chance to improve your home today! As for the timeframes and prices, please feel free to read each category’s respective page for all of the info you’ll need. We’ll also provide a short overview of each category here for our readers who don’t have much time.

Wood Floor Installation

Installing wood flooring is a complicated process that requires years of successful projects to be executed correctly. That’s why each of our floor techs are trained in the proper use of the industrial-grade equipment we use. That way, no wood planks are damaged in the process and there is no need to go overbudget for materials. As to the installation itself, we’ll sum it up to where it’s not very technical. First, all of the old flooring is removed completely to avoid any obstacles to the new flooring. Then, the sub-flooring may or may not be removed depending on moisture tests as well as the condition of the sub-flooring. Once the sub-flooring is taken care of, the new floor is installed above it, with either one of three distinct methods: nails, glue or staples. The specific method is determined by the composition of the floor as well as the location. When the floor has been placed, it is stained if unfinished flooring was chosen. Regardless of finish, when it is ready the floor is coated with several layers of polyurethane that both seal in the stain as well as help protect the floor from future damage. Once the polyurethane dries, the floor is safe to walk on again.

Hardwood Refinishing

The refinishing process is much like the installation process, the exception being that the floor will not be replaced, but rather it will be restored. First, the floor is sanded down several times. The amount of times it is sanded is dependent on the type of floor as well as its condition. The better the condition of the floor, the more times a floor can be refinished. After it is sanded, various chemicals are applied in order to strengthen the floor. When those chemicals have dried, the floor is stained, either with one made to look like the original floor, or a custom stain that was commissioned by the client. Once the stain has dried, the floor is then coated with several layers of polyurethane. These layers seal in the stain as well as help protect the floor. When these are dry, the floor is safe to walk on again.

Wood Floor repair

Repairing a wood floor can be as simple as refinishing a certain area or completely replacing everything in a large radius. The most important step is to survey the area and decide exactly what kind of repair is needed. Common repair project types are: holes, water damage, buckling, stain, and deep scratches. Each type of project has its own methods and guidelines, so suffice to say that it is very specific and meticulous to repair wood floors.

Wood Buffing

Though easily the least complicated process of the four, buffing a wood floor takes a steady hand and a keen eye. This is because the industrial-grade equipment that we use can permanently damage your floor if used incorrectly. However, you won’t have to worry about this when we work on your floor. The first step in buffing a floor is to lightly sand it. After it is sanded, the floor has various chemicals applied to it so that it can withstand the strain of several more years of use. When the chemicals dry, several layers of polyurethane are applied, so that the floor can prevent light scratching and damage.
